Do I need to paint over the Zinsser (BIN) with concrete floor paint?
I painted Zinser sealer on to my concrete basement floor to seal in odors, but I didnt paint over it with a concrete floor paint. I have put laminate on top and I can still smell the Zinser 6 months later. I am a little concerned of the toxicity as the room is a spare bedroom.
I can easily take the laminate up and put it down again after painting over the sealer.
Do I still need to paint over the Zinser with concrete floor paint?
Thanks for the info. I was dealing with cat urine which why I used Zinsser. I think I might have put the laminate floor down too soon. I dont remember exactly how long. Maybe a day or two.
In the normal course of events your coat of Zinsser would dry quickly and odours gone shortley after. I am wondering if you have put this coat on quite heavily and if the floor had 'pores' in the surface and you flooded it in the name of doing a thorough job. The heavier a coat of paint the longer it takes to dry and it needs air to complete the drying process, so I am also wondering how soon afterwards you laid your laminate floor and maybe stunted the drying process.
I would take the laminate floor up and allow the floor to breathe and complete the drying process. It may be touch dry, but Zinsser is a hard inflexible paint and it should not feel soft if you press your fingernail into it. If it does then it has not hardened (completely dried) and needs air to complete this. You can speed up the process with fans or a warm but ventilated environment. Depending how thick the paint is I would leave your laminate floor up anything from a few days to a few weeks, monitoring it as you go.
Another possibility is if your concrete floor is new and still drying – the Zinsser would have had the effect of slowing the concrete drying out. If so, leave take the laminate floor up until the odours go. If it is a new concrete floor that isn't completely dried you might have to thoroughly score the Zinsser with a wire brush to let the concrete have access to air.
There shouldn't be any need to paint over your Zinsser. You would not normally need to seal a concrete floor for odours as a new one needs to dry out thoroughly and an old one ought not have any inherent smell. You might seal it if it is friable (loose, dusty, gritty) and this can be done with bog standard sealer or even cheap PVA.
Cat Pee – I understand.
