One of the leading contractors posted this video showcasing how easy it is to remove traffic paint and thermoplastic off of portland cement concrete without grooving the surface.

The contractor used a SMITH X3 gas operated (optional hydraulic powered) triple head traffic line remover powered by a skid loader to remove the markings at speeds over 2mph. In this video, the yellow (non-lead) edgeline stripe was completely removed. The leftover residue will be swept up afterwards. Operators can attach a separate dust collector followed by a sweeper to collect the removed materials in one operation.

Erasing removes the coatings and not the aggregate fines which are blown-away by high pressure water. Removing thermoplastic materials when the surface is extremely hot (i.e.rubberized asphalt or slurry seal) may require additional removal controls to keep surface termperature low enough so thermoplastic is not re-applied. These include shallow removal passes and the use of water to keep the surface temperature cool. Adding water will also eliminate any airborne dust.
