One of the leading contractors posted this video showcasing how easy it is to remove traffic paint and thermoplastic off of portland cement concrete without grooving the surface.

The contractor used a SMITH X3 gas operated (optional hydraulic powered) triple head traffic line remover powered by a skid loader to remove the markings at speeds over 2mph. In this video, the yellow (non-lead) edgeline stripe was completely removed. The leftover residue will be swept up afterwards. Operators can attach a separate dust collector followed by a sweeper to collect the removed materials in one operation.

If you are looking to remove highway, airfield and parking lines or markings without grooves or undulations, the SMITH LNX8 or X3 Eraser helps you do-it faster with better surface finishes.

BR with Striping Services commenting on his X3 removal finish ” The X3 is the only machine I found that removes striping on open grade or chip seal asphalt. Sand and Water Blasting operations are far too abrasive and strips out the binder which causes the pavement surface to rut”

FACT: WHY NO GROOVES and UNDULATIONS?
Erasers like the SMITH LNX8 and X3 leave a smooth surface finish by “erasing-out” the markings using a circular rolling, bevel-edged surface pattern. This removal rotation will NOT create sharp-edge grooving or “ghost-lines” unlike the marks left from “flail cutter drum-style” scarifiers (aka grinders).

Some may call an Eraser or Scarifier a “Grinder”. This term is incorrect. Although they both mechanically abrade with or without water, only the Eraser removes using the same circular pattern as a hydroblaster. Adding a dust collector to the Eraser’s collection port eliminates airborne particles. A broom vac truck in tow leaves the surface clean and ready for immediate re-striping.

Water vs Erasing
Airports and Highway Authorities looking to save money and protect their asphalt roads, find the X3 and LNX8 Erasers are a better alternative to hydroblasting. Erasing removes the coatings and not the aggregate fines which are blown-away by high pressure water. Even on concrete surfaces, thick coatings like thermoplastic, epoxies and paints are quickly erased with an X3 or LNX8. On projects forbidding grinders and requiring waterblast only, contractors use an Eraser in front of their hydroblasters to remove the ‘”above surface coatings” which effectively doubles their production.
